Turtle Race Report – Wednesday, August 19, 2009, Longville, MN
The last turtle race of the 2009 season was a whopper. First, it was the largest, last day crowd in recent years with 320 racers competing for top honors. Second, the weather was tenuous with rained filled clouds threatening to deposit their drops on the crowd. However, the rain held and the races and other events went on without a flaw. The two racers that emerged as grand winners were six-year-old Danny Bubalo of Anoka who had the fastest turtle and thirteen-year-old Aidan Anderson of Seattle, WA
who had the slowest turtle. Pre-race activities were as popular as ever. The hula-hoop participants and dance participants jammed the center circle to compete as best in their group. Again the chicken dance singers were outstanding. They were Mackenzie Davis of Columbia Heights, Trent
Mix of Longville, Taylor Sturgell of West St. Paul and Ryan Kennedy of Hackensack. The YMCA dance leaders were also very energetic. They were Megan Narog of Fergus Falls, Alivia Garbe of Maplewood, Triston Garbe of Maplewood and Austin Eckhoff of Eden Prairie. Thirteen resorts participated in the Resort Turtle Race. The Chamber wishes to thank the many Longville area businesses that contributed prizes this summer for the racers and racing participants. The middle of July through the first week of August is historically the peak of the vacationing season up here in the northland. That was reflected in the wonderful crowds of racers that came to Longville on Wednesday. There were 433 racers on Wednesday exceeding previous years. In an economy where business is somewhat down, it is up at turtle races in Longville. Both kids and adults love to race turtles and play the games in Longville. The circle was jammed packed for hula hoopers and dancers. It was a blast to see that many kids and adults on mainstreet participating in pre-race festivities. This week's famed Chicken Dance Singers performed exquisitely. They were Julia Szilagyi of Naples FL; Tyler George of Bloomington, MN; Jenna Hamberg of Eden Prairie, MN and Smantha Meek of Ramsey, MN. Next came the YMCA dance leaders. The weather in the middle of July is, historically, northern Minnesota's most perfect time of the year. But for 2009, it was uncharacteristically very, very cold. In spite of the harsh, cold wind, 278 racers showed up to compete for racing honors. However, finding it difficult to compete were the turtles who looked as if they wished they were back in the bottom of the lake were it was toasty warm. First, there were more birthdays than can be remembered. The crowd sang happy birthday to over 12 young people and adults. Then there were many anniversaries acknowledged. There were even newly-weds who traveled from Indianapolis, IN to celebrate their nuptials at turtle races. With hands waving, pleading to be picked to come up to lead dances and sing, those selected stepped on to the turtle mobile stage with a bit of prehension. However they performed their best for the crowd. The Chicken Dance Singers were Christa Gibson of Kingsport, TN; Jessica Borgert of Blaine; Ross Wickemeyer of Urbandale, IA; and Alex Bridges of Peoria, IL. The YMCA dance leaders included Ashli Williams of Durant, IA; Nick Harris of Chillicothe, IL; Morgan Flann of Lake Lillian, MN and Emma Fagerlee of St. Anthony, MN. Two lucky young people won tickets to Valley Fair and one won a package of tickets to Mall of America entertainment attractions. The Valley Fair winners were ten-year-old Marissa Phillips of Eden Prairie, MN and nine year old Cassie Reistad of Faribault, MN. Nine-year-old Nick Acosta of St. Paul won the Mall of America package of tickets. All of the tickets were sponsored by BL Broadcasting of Brainerd. There were thirteen resorts that participated in the Resort Turtle Race. The winner was nine-year-old Joe Dimartino of Oakdale, MN who with his family was vacationing at Tri Birches Resort of Hackensack. Championship honors for the regular turtle races went to two very young racers. Oneyear- old Logan Pericak of Winona, MN was Grand Champion while four-year-old Zach Mattes of Sussex, Wisconsin was Grand Slowpoke Champion. A dedicated group of community and business volunteers made this event possible. Pat Boen with the help of Ryan and Marisa Skajewski judged all of the events. Sue Meyer, Stan Johnson, and Rose Franta registered racers. Dodee Colberg and Jim Felegy sold tickets and souvenirs. Marge McDonald and Diane Kutschied handed out prizes. Popcorn maker was Gordon Atzen. Stan Johnson managed the security of the street. Game operators were Debbie and Laura Oates, Terry Felegy, Alexis Kalli, Craig Riendeau, Chuck Colberg, Tristra Wynn, Elsie Hagen, Donna Holloway, Tyler Hoyt, Adam Searcy, and Jackie Searcy. Businesses that sent helpers included Keller Williams Realtors, Thunder Lake Lodge, Pine Ridge Resort, Bear Pause Theater, and Longville Lakes Clinic. Also working very hard each week are the turtle vendors. The three young people who provide turtles each week for the racers are Tyler and Evan Daudt of Longville and Brittney Frederick of Pine River. Helping with set-up and teardown was Gerry Broshar, Tony Ozark, a great group from Camp Olson, and the volunteers. John Weins, Sandy Weins and Gerry Broshar handled the announcing duties.
